QUESTION 01

What styles of driveway gates are available?

Gate style should complement your home's architecture and the surrounding landscape. Common styles include:

  • Classic Estate: Arched top wrought iron with scrollwork, stone or brick pillars
  • Modern Minimal: Horizontal slat steel or aluminum, clean lines, hidden automation
  • Hill Country Ranch: Cedar and iron combination, rustic hardware, ranch branding
  • Full Privacy: Solid wood or steel panels — no visibility through the gate
  • Contemporary: Laser-cut geometric patterns in steel, Corten patina, LED accent lighting
  • Traditional Ornamental: Spear-top pickets, finials, and decorative castings

QUESTION 02

What materials are used for custom driveway gates?

Custom driveway gates are fabricated from four primary materials, each with distinct characteristics for durability, style, and maintenance.

Wrought Iron

The most popular choice for Texas estates. Wrought iron is strong, elegant, and offers visibility through the gate while maintaining security. Iron gates pair well with stone columns and ranch-style architecture. Requires periodic painting or powder-coating to prevent rust.

Wood (Cedar, Cypress, Hardwood)

Wood gates bring natural warmth and privacy. Cedar and cypress are the preferred species for Central Texas — both are naturally rot-resistant and hold up well in heat and humidity. Wood gates can be paired with iron frames for structural support.

Aluminum

Aluminum gates offer the look of wrought iron at a lower cost and weight. They don't rust, making them low-maintenance. Best for residential applications where extreme strength isn't required.

Steel

Steel gates deliver maximum strength and security. Modern steel gates can be fabricated as solid privacy panels or laser-cut with decorative patterns. Powder-coating or galvanizing prevents corrosion. Corten (weathering) steel develops a natural rust patina that blends with Hill Country limestone.

QUESTION 03

How is a custom gate designed and built?

The custom gate process follows four stages:

  1. Consultation: We visit your property to discuss style preferences, measure the driveway opening, evaluate terrain, and review power and access options.
  2. Design: We create a design proposal with material specifications, dimensions, gate style, operator type, and access control options. You review and approve before fabrication begins.
  3. Fabrication: Your gate is built to specification. Wrought iron and steel are welded and finished in our shop. Wood components are cut, assembled, and sealed. Finishing includes powder-coating, paint, stain, or natural patina treatment.
  4. Installation: The completed gate is installed on-site with posts, footings, operator, wiring, safety sensors, and access devices. Typical installation completes in 1-2 days.

QUESTION 04

Can I automate a custom driveway gate?

Yes — virtually any custom gate can be equipped with an automatic operator. Automation options include:

  • Swing gate operators (underground or post-mounted)
  • Slide gate operators (chain-driven or direct-drive)
  • Solar-powered systems for remote locations
  • Battery backup for power outages
  • Smart access: smartphone control, Wi-Fi keypads, video intercom

We recommend planning automation during the design phase so the gate is built to the correct weight and specifications for the operator.

See our keypads, callboxes, and access control options for the full range of entry systems we install.

QUESTION 05

Do you repair and restore existing gates?

Yes. If your existing gate has rust, damage, or wear, we can restore it — often for less than the cost of a full replacement. Services include:

  • Rust removal and repainting/powder-coating
  • Welding repair for bent, cracked, or broken sections
  • Panel replacement (matching the original design)
  • Post repair and re-setting
  • Operator upgrade or replacement
  • Adding automation to a manual gate

QUESTION 06

Permits and HOA considerations for driveway gates

Before installing a driveway gate, check local regulations and homeowner association rules:

City of Austin: Driveway gates generally do not require a building permit unless they affect a public right-of-way, drainage easement, or are part of a larger construction project. Gates within a front setback may have height restrictions. Electrical permits may be required for hardwired operator installations.

Travis County (unincorporated areas): Fewer restrictions, but deed restrictions and easements still apply. Check your property survey for easement locations before setting gate posts.

HOA requirements: Many neighborhoods in Westlake, Lakeway, and Cedar Park have architectural review committees that must approve gate designs before installation. Common HOA requirements include material type, color, maximum height, and setback from the street. We can provide design drawings formatted for HOA submissions.

We advise clients to confirm permit and HOA requirements during the consultation phase — before design and fabrication begin. This prevents delays and redesign costs.

QUESTION 07

Gate maintenance and longevity

A well-maintained custom gate lasts 20-30+ years. Maintenance requirements vary by material:

  • Wrought iron: Inspect annually for rust, especially at welds and ground contact. Touch up with rust-inhibiting primer and matching paint. Full repaint every 5-8 years. Lubricate hinges and operator arms.
  • Wood (cedar/cypress): Seal or stain within 6 months of installation, then every 2-3 years. Check for warping, splitting, and insect damage. Replace hardware (hinges, latches) as needed — wood movement loosens fasteners over time.
  • Aluminum: Rinse with water seasonally. Check fasteners. Aluminum doesn't rust, but it can oxidize — wax-based sealant protects the finish.
  • Steel (powder-coated): Inspect coating for chips or scratches. Seal any exposed metal immediately to prevent corrosion underneath. Powder coating typically lasts 10-15 years before recoating is needed.
  • Corten steel: Designed to rust — no finish maintenance needed. Ensure runoff from the patina doesn't stain adjacent concrete or stone. Install a gravel buffer below the gate if staining is a concern.

Annual service by Austin Estate Gate includes lubrication, electrical testing, sensor alignment, and visual inspection.

"We had them install a driveway gate at our home — they showed up every day on time, had professional installers who took their time, a salesperson who gave us 5 different options, then did the work on time, on budget. When my own ignorance required help, they showed up the same day, fixed my issue, educated me with patience and professionalism. Highly recommend this team."

"Our gate stopped working during the cold snap. I didn't catch the name of the person who answered the phone — the day before Christmas Eve, no less — but he was super helpful and talked my husband through how we could get the gate open to make it through the long holiday weekend. Thank you for taking the time to help us."
