There are two main categories of automatic gates: swing gates and slide gates. The right choice depends on your driveway layout, terrain, and available space.
Swing gates open inward or outward on hinges, similar to a door. They require clearance space in the swing arc and work best on flat or gently sloped driveways.
Slide gates move horizontally along a track or rail. They require space along the fence line but no swing clearance, making them ideal for sloped or narrow driveways.
A dual swing gate splits the weight into two lighter leaves. A slide gate carries its weight on the track instead of on the hinge post, and it needs no swing room, which is why it suits sloped and tight driveways. One leaf means one operator and fewer parts to keep adjusted; two leaves means two of everything.

We size every operator to your gate's weight, length, and daily cycle count so the motor isn't overworked. A light residential swing gate and a heavy commercial slide gate need different operators, we recommend the right one rather than the most expensive one.

Retail kits exist. We work the other way around: we build the gate for your opening, then size the operator to that gate's weight, length, and how many times a day it runs (Question 06), so the two are matched from the start.
Settle it with your survey and any easement or HOA paperwork before the posts are set, because moving a post set in concrete means starting that post over. Rules vary by city and HOA. On the site visit we walk the driveway layout and terrain with you, and the gate goes where your paperwork allows.
One leaf is simpler: one operator, one set of hinges or one track, fewer parts to adjust. Two leaves split the weight and shorten the swing, which helps on a wide opening or a tight driveway. We size it on the site visit, before anything is fabricated.
